Josie the rescued Border Collie
I will always remember the first time I met the new family dog. I was visiting from college and for the first time since our old dog (Panda #2 may she rip) passed away there would be a pitter-patter of puppy paws on the wooden kitchen floor. Then darting through my legs was this little black and white fuzz-butt that would soon become the central figure of the family.
Her name Josie, her breed predominantly border collie, and the word out on border collies was their higher intelligence and energy. So my family went from having a perfectly mild tibetan terrier to a riley wild border collie who was noticeably scarred from her early life living on the streets of Cleveland. They literally found this poor pup running down the streets of east Cleveland. My sister and mom picked her out on a random trip to the humane society where she apparently went to the edge of the cage and put her paws in a prey position for my sister.
Back to my first encounter with the fuzz-butt. She was so small at the time that I picked her up with one hand and just kind of looked at this cute puppy face. She was defiinitely a different type of dog compared to our past dogs who pretty much epitomized the house pet. Getting her from the humane society meant the possibility and then realization that she has temper issues. I would find out more about these temper issues when she grew up, but for now she was this adorable dog with a hestitant personality. To me it seemed that in those first few months she was really feeling things out. She had not gotten close to anyone in the family, and this is in a house where the dog gets a lot of tlc. One of her first idiosyncrasies was that we had to flick her puppy food across the floor and that was the only way she would eat it. This only lasted the first couple months but there were other things that made her weird in my mind. Some things were likely due to her early puppyhood, like being afraid of plastic bags or a broom, but other things weren’t as easily explained. One of her first favorite things to chew on was empty plastic water bottles and it made a considerable amount of noise, so she loved to run into a room and get attention with one or wake my parents up in the morning with them. As for how she was with me in her puppydom it was pretty much fear, and its not so much that I teased her, but that I came home in the summer and she is like who is this guy who thinks he can pick me up all the time. It was not long before her puppy teeth fell out and were replaced with a jaw and teeth similar to a velociraptor and thus, she no longer would stand being picked up.
